Locations of the Voice
Live performance
2025

In this performance, voices become momentarily connected through the physical act of reading and the very text that they are reading aloud. Voices are shaped by the languages and cultures their bodies and minds have carried within them. Reading aloud is a simple yet profound act, involving a physical “interpretation” of the text through voices—private and public, and condensed and fleeting in nature.

I am especially interested in the aspect of the voice that is simultaneously internal and external, singular and multiple. Ventriloquism, for me, is one of the best embodiments of this dual nature of the voice, and I drew inspiration from its paradox. In this piece, “articulation” unfolds through exchanges between different physical selves and voices, while the identities of these voices remain interchangeable—constantly complementing, contradicting, influencing, and rewriting each other and themselves.

Locations of the Voice premiered in Jyväskylä, Finland, on October 25, as part of Art without Transportation, an art initiative by Äkkigalleria (Anna Ruth and Juho Jäppinen).
